This look was huge for the spring runways, but glamorous Hitchock-heroine-types have been randomly spotted working it for years, to devastating effect: There you are, strolling down the street, feeling cute, when out of nowhere some fabulous Kelly-Deneuve-Radziwill-esque woman breezes past you in said ensemble, suddenly rendering your own outfit too tailored, too casual, too young, too old, too whatever—just generally messing up your whole universe.

In their spring ’09 show, Obedient Sons and Daughters pulled off the look with aplomb: They showcased models in pieces that complemented (but never matched) one another, in a palette of summery neutral hues playfully paired with just a hint of pattern. It’s cohesive and pulled-together, but just unstudied enough. To keep the silhouette flattering and crisp, be careful with proportions: Look for neatly cut, narrow shorts that hit around mid-thigh and longer, and hip-grazing jackets that elongate the body. Finish with strappy sandals with at least an inch or two of height—remember: longer, longer—and a simple camisole or blouse.
