Make Your Own Assist: Wheel Pose

The other day, as I was getting my favorite assist in wheel pose from partner, I thought “it’s too bad you can do this assist by yourself.” And then I remembered that you can! I had a teacher years ago who used this trick all the time. So, here’s how it goes down.

•In the partner version, you push up into wheel while holding your partner’s ankles as he or she stands at your head. It takes a lot of pressure off the wrists and really allows the shoulders to open.
•If you are partnerless, set up two blocks to lean on the wall. Place the blocks vertically at a 45 degree angle with the top edge resting on the wall and the bottom edge resting on your mat (use a mat here so the blocks won’t slip). Come into position for wheel with your hands on the blocks. Your palms should be on the block and your fingers can hang off the edge. Push up to wheel. Say, “aaahhhh.”
