Cropped Pants

Cropped pants are as capable of ruining an outfit as they of are making one. And the fact is that come springtime we see a lot of women cluelessly walking around in horrendous-looking cropped pants. We say, when in doubt, do like Stella McCartney, who revitalized the whole concept of menswear for women and spun out the most perfect pair of cropped pants we’ve ever seen: A bit slimmer, trimmer, and narrower than the bizarrely wide-legged boxy cuts of the past, these hit a few inches above the ankle and taper down the leg cleanly and narrowly. A bit of pleating at the hip gives the necessary grown-up feel (they’re not meant to be tight, like a 13-year-old’s pants) but rather something you can easily tuck a button-down into. When the trousers are paired with an oversize boyfriend jacket and a barely there blouse, the proportions are more like an oversize shirt and leggings than a “suit,” and, done in warmed-up shades of beige, ivory, and brown, the effect is wonderfully soft and feminine.
